Time Well Spent

Throughout my time at Walden, I feel I have learned a lot about myself and my journey as an educator. To begin, I have learned that I have a great community of support which helped me to become more confident in my ability to complete this program but also to help me grow as an educator. I have found that I have established relationships with my colleagues throughout this program and the benefits of these relationships will be endless. I have learned that establishing collaborative relationships is crucial to my success, but also the success of my students.

This program has opened my eyes to anti-bias education. I have become more aware of times where I may have been biased towards others based on my beliefs and understandings of others. While I have learned so much about anti-bias education, I believe my biggest take away is that families and children should feel comfortable and celebrated in the classroom regardless of their diversity.  Educators need to be inclusive of all children and their families, while also being aware of their own personal privileges and bias. I have become more open-minded and have already adapted my classroom to be more inclusive.

Finally, I have learned the importance of my role as an educator and how I am an advocate for young learners. I have gained a deeper understanding of how an educator has the ability to make a difference in a child’s life. Not only can I impact young learners in the classroom, I can also impact my state and country. At the end of the program, putting together a Capstone project helped me to learn that I am capable of implementing new ideas and I do have the ability to be a leader in the education field.

Throughout this program, I have established a long-term goal for myself as a professional in the education field. I hope to continue to be an advocate for young learners by pushing for a more developmentally appropriate curriculum for early childhood education. I hope to begin with implementing more opportunities for play within the curriculum for young learners in elementary school.

Thank you, Dr. Embree, for your support throughout this course. The constant and consistent support allowed me to work to my full potential while also pushing me to challenge myself as a learner. Thank you to my colleagues who have completed this journey with me. I have enjoyed interacting with each of you every week, sharing ideas, and discussing different viewpoints. I have valued the time and opportunities I have had in order to learn from each and every one of you; thank you for helping me to become a better educator and a stronger professional in the education field. I wish you all the best in the future and your journey to accomplish your goals and I hope each of you continues to be advocates for young learners and remember that you do make a difference in each child’s life you touch!

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

Throughout my research, I have three ECE jobs that would be of interest to me. Some of the positions I found work throughout the world, while others focus on both the United States and the World.

The organizations I chose to share are:

UNICEF appealed to me because this organization helps provide opportunities for young children in several different countries in order to provide these children with the support they need to have a successful future. This organizations work ranges from providing educational support, to vaccinations, placing children in a well fitted family and also assisting with environmental changes among other supports (United Nations Children’s Fund, (n.d.). An available position that has caught my attention is a Child Survival and Development Specialist. This job requires an individual to work closely with the organization in order to help provide survival and developmental needs for young children and women. This job would require travel to Africa for an opportunity to work hands on with different members involved with UNICEF. This individual would need leadership skills as they would be responsible for providing support to others as well as experience working in foreign counties.

Bernard Van Leer Foundation also caught my interest because they believe if we make changes early in a child’s life, it could have a major impact on their future and I strongly agree with this. This organization focuses on providing young children with opportunities for schooling, as well as resources to aid in their development while also providing support for pregnant moms to ensure they have access to proper healthcare and nutrition while pregnant (Bernard Van Leer (n.d.). There are currently no job openings with this organization, but becoming a board member would be an intriguing profession to hold. These individuals help fulfill the vision of the organization by creating partnerships with different groups that will help the organization become successful. These individuals would need to have early childhood education experience as well as leadership skills in order to work collaboratively with individuals throughout different countries.

Save the Children is another organization that I was drawn to as I particularly like how this organization works globally as well as in the United States. As I explored this organization further I found information regarding support for children who have social and emotional learning difficulties which I believe is a great focus. This organization offers programs to support these children in order to help them learn appropriate coping strategies. This organization has several jobs available. One job is a head start teacher where you are responsible for helping to foster the growth of children’s development as well as meeting the standards of the program. This individual should have a degree in early childhood education as well as experience working with young children while building collaborative relationships with coworkers. A site coordinator was also intriguing as this individual is responsible for implementing after school programs for young children which focuses on enrichment activities and provides healthy choices for children. These individuals need strong communication skills as well as experience working with young children. Leadership skills for both positions would be beneficial in either case as both jobs would require the individual to take charge of the situation.

As I consider national and federal organizations that appeal to me, I compiled a list of possible employment opportunities that would spark my interest.
·      NAEYC sparked my interest because they are such a large organization which impacts so many young learners as well as many professionals. The job I found is an affiliate relation coordinator. Within this job title I would help establish realistic goals for young learners, lead projects, supervise other employees and collaborate with other departments in NAEYC. In order to hold this job, one is required to have a bachelor’s degree, three years of experience in a related field, and management experience.

·      A teaching position at the Ron Clark Academy. The Ron Clark Academy focuses on innovative strategies to help engage students to build relationships with other students. Teachers at the Ron Clark Academy have high expectations for their students and create a very engaging learning environment with a dedication to teaching. The Academy also serves as a major professional development opportunity for educators to attend and learn new strategies to take to their school. In order to obtain this job, I would need to have a teaching certification for the state I live in and have three years of teaching experience.

·      Director of Jump Start.  Within this career I would work with young children to help prepare them for kindergarten. This organization provides high-quality education to preschool children to help all children have equal opportunities when entering kindergarten. In order to obtain this job, I would need to hold a degree in education and leadership and experience in the education field.
