Expanding Horizons and Expanding Resources

I attempted to listen to the World Forum radio and podcast, unfortunately, they were unavailable so I research The Global Fund for Children. I am intrigued by the number of children this organization can reach whom suffer from a challenging childhood. This organization focuses on many different aspects of a child’s life that could impact their education. They focus on education and ensuring all children have access to high- quality education, gender equality where all children have the same rights, youth empowerment is their third focus where children can shape their own future and lead healthy, productive lives and finally, freedom from violence and exploitation (World Forum Foundation). This organization identifies smaller organizations that are focusing on these four focus areas, and contributes to their organization by supplying a grant. I find it interesting that this organization can make contributions to further research and supports allowing more children in varying countries a greater opportunity to be successful.

As I was looking over the websites and early childhood organizations, I was looking for a topic that I do not know much about, and something that is a current issue within early childhood education. I wanted to focus on a site that I have not used before in my research. I decided to focus on National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER). This website is generated by Rutgers Graduate School of Education. From my observation of this website there appears to be a focus on early learning, more specifically the preschool years. I believe preschool programs will be changing in the coming years as there is going to be more focus on high- quality preschool programs and the requirements of these teachers. I would like to learn more about this topic and stay informed about the current discussion and decisions. There are many tabs throughout the website that provides more information that is current but has also complied information from previous years. I was able to subscribe to a weekly news article to stay informed on current information. On the home page of this website there is a section titled “Weekly Education News”, I found this section of the website to be interesting and informative.

  1. Hey Brianna,
I also learned about The Global Fund for Children. How incredible to touch so many children and people around the world. What a difference one idea can make. It truly restored my faith in humanity researching some of these sites. Similarly speaking when I reviewed The Children's Defense Fund. There are so many amazing organizations that just started with the thought of helping our children. We can each be so powerful and even more powerful when we are connected and working towards one cause, which is prioritizing our children. I have noted the site you chose as it seems to be a great asset for my while working with preschool.
    -Thanks for your insights,

  2. Hi Brianna! I was too very surprised how many organizations are helping support the causes for this young children around the world to better their life, including their education in some of the countries. Just last night I was at the Science Musuem in St. Paul, MN and was watching the IMAX movie Dream Big. The focus was talking about engineers building tall buildings, bridges etc. However, the film also discussed how this lady was building bridges in countries where young children were walking through fast moving rivers where children have died trying to get to school in the morning. The first story in this film was about the country Haiti. Avery Bang the civil engineer partnered with members of the local community in Haiti who knew the river in Haiti to talk about how the river shifts during the rain season. Together they worked in building this bridge so that children can go to school safely, for families to access medicine when they needed to etc. It was remarkable the poverty in this area and yet how appreciative the community was for the building of this bridge.

  3. Hi Brianna,

There were so many that I have not decided which will be my selections. I was interested in World Forum, and the Global Fund for Children, and NEER is one I have been on before. I look at all these organizations and I wanted to see the benefits making a difference in the amount of children needing this specific help. It almost as if the numbers increase as fast as the resources are created. What a world we live in when people who should help harm. The podcast about Joe breaks my heart, as if decency and love is abandoning the human race. The cruelty to women and girls in India will it end in our lifetime? I see all the good and try to focus on that, but sometimes it just so disappointing that while we live in relatively safety so many are suffering.
You did a great job of summarizing the podcasts you viewed, I was totally into each one you describe.

  4. Hi Brianna!

I enjoyed reading your post; thanks for sharing your thoughts! I also agree that the Global Fund for Children is intriguing because it reaches so many children. While the world has a long way to go with reaching every child, this is a great way to start and it looks like they've already done so much. I researched the NIEER in a previous course, and it truly is a great resource! Be sure to check out the yearbooks they have dated back to 2003. They provide a lot of information regarding preschools across the country.

I am glad you shared your insight on this institute.Preschool as well as early childhood is one of my passions, so this institute is a good resource for me. I also like that it offers weekly news letters.
