Getting to Know International Organizations

Organization: Concern Worldwide U.S

Organization: Concern Worldwide U.S

Concern is a worldwide organization that works in the world’s poorest countries. This organization has three main areas of focus: Emergency response after natural disasters to the area, health and nutrition and climate response and resilience (Concern USA). This organization also works with providing education in order to better the livelihood of all individuals as well as access to safe water. After researching this organization, I learned they focus on the power of women. This organization believes “Women are the most powerful change agents in their communities”; women have the ability to impact their family, which in- return impacts the community and ultimately the world.

This organization focuses on specific communities and looks at the children and women of these communities and determines what supports are needed to eliminate extreme poverty. Concern USA works within the community and the existing “social structure” of the community. This organization thinks about the community as a whole looking at the men, women, and children as well as the villages and neighborhoods while also considering the 3,000 staff members, donors and partners of Concern USA (Concern USA). While Concern USA looks at the community as a whole, there is emphasis put on women and children rights, and an effort to make their voices heard to ensure equality among all community members.  From my understanding, this organization likes to provide practical solutions for each community, but also provides support where community members can adapt new policies and learnings to better their future.

I always knew that poverty was an issue throughout the world, especially in third world countries, however, I was unaware of the different organizations that are helping these countries and how effective they are. Throughout my research on Concern USA, I learned this organization was able to reach 9.1 million people in 28 countries spanning from Africa, Middle East, Asia, and the Caribbean broken down into many areas of concern. For example, malnutrition treatment for 200,00 people, 32 health centers and units impacting 200,00 people in Niger as 34,500 families benefiting from water, health and sanitation, to name a few. When looking into statistics from this organization, it was put into perspective how many people are impacted by just one organization and the amount of poverty throughout the world. I also learned there are many ways to get involved whether you make a donation, become part of the team, or attend an event to learn more information. Completing this research this week has inspired me to learn more about these programs and look into ways I can contribute.

  1. Hi Brianna! You have chosen a very nice organization to talk about. One of the things that I noticed about this website and the other website from Susan Schmidt was that both of the websites mention resilience. Going through proverty, especially this type of poverty that I have never experienced such as lack of water, nutrition and health, makes you wonder what makes the individuals get up every morning and what motivates them. I took the water knowledge quiz on the website....received 7 out of 9 answers...interesting! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Brianna,
Like you said I always knew we had starving children in third world countries, but I did not know that I would continue to see starving children throughout my life. If all these organizations are doing as much as they say, I wonder what it will take to end it. From reading your post and others, I think that today organizations are using a different strategy. And I hope and pray that this time using advocacy, changing policy, education, and not just feeding, but showing how to feed yourself, in my lifetime we can see a change. I would say I had never heard of this organization, but apparently there are a myriad organizations with the same purpose. Thank you for finding an organization I did not know about, this week has been a wealth of information of those who would end poverty.

  3. Hi Brianna,
I really enjoyed reading your post on Concern. What a great organization.Like Sharyl mention in her comment, I can't even imagine living with out basic necessities for life. It's absolutely heart wrenching to think of children that have to endure such extreme conditions because of poverty. It is so great that Concern has helped so many people and is reaching out to so many different countries.

  4. Hi Brianna!

Thank you for sharing this organization with us and shedding light on the numerous ways they assist people living in poverty. What astounded me was the number of people they've helped- 9.1 million people! That's amazing. I also found it interesting that the organization believes strongly in the power of women. It's refreshing to see how they view the impact women have on their families and communities. However, you also mentioned that they also see the community as a whole, which I believe is a good approach to influencing change. Change occurs when we all can work together to make it happen.
