Competent Communication

Martin Luther King Jr.

As I began to think about competent communicators and there are many individuals from the past that I felt were great communicators, I decided to talk about Martin Luther King JR. As we all know Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about segregation and is famous for his “I have a Dream Speech”, which touched many individuals across the country. I believe the impact of his speech was because he had a strong passion for his topic of discussion which was shown through his actions as well as how he gave his speech. O’Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, and Teven (2015) explain a competent communicator “is effective and appropriate for a given situation” (p. 13). MLK Jr was effective and was able to create change within his society, which began with his communication through his speech.  Great communication is not about what is being said, but rather who is saying it and how it is being said. MLK Jr had a great passion and for that reason he was an effective communicator and he is still celebrated and respected to this day.

I would model some of my communication behaviors after MLK Jr. because he was an effective communicator. As I mentioned, he communication was based on his passion, and I hope that my passion for working with young children is shown through my communication. In addition to this, when MLK would give speeches, he was not overbearing with his gestures, and he was able to capture the attention of his audience. MLK appeared to be a natural when it came to communicating about his passion, which made him a great speaker and started many changes within society.

  1. Brianna,

What an excellent person to highlight. His communication is truly historical in the impact it has made on individuals. I liked that you touched on the ability MLK Jr. had to relate with others in his communication and speeches. He had an ability to touch human nature, breaking stereotypes word by word. All individuals have dreams for their children and their future, and that should be the focus as a human race. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Brianna,

Great selection for a communicator!! MLK Jr was one of the most influential speakers and his words still have such an impact today. As you said, his communication was based on his passion, and that's what we need to remember as educators. Being passionate towards education will drive our thoughts, words, and actions to advocate for children and families and make us stronger teachers. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Hi Brianna!

I also thought of choosing Martin Luther King Jr. His words are still used to this day. Do you feel that his repetition of the phrase "I have a dream" was part of what drew people in? Think about it, we still use that phrase as a writing prompt for children to write and discuss their dreams. I love that you chose him as an competent communicator. His powerful words and wisdom still drive us to strive for a better future.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on what makes MLK Jr a great communicator.
